Gomoa-Effutu land dispute in Ghana

Overview

A violent land dispute between the Gomoa and Effutu communities in Ghana’s Central Region resulted in at least three deaths and approximately 15 to 19 injuries. On September 1, 2026, a mob of roughly 300 individuals reportedly armed with guns, cutlasses, and stones attacked New Winneba, causing damage to homes and shops.

In response to the violence, the Inspector-General of Police deployed reinforcements and armored vehicles, leading to the arrest of six suspects. Local political and traditional leaders have reacted to the incident; Gomoa traditional authorities and MP Kwame Asare Obeng claimed the location of the Effutu North District Police Station inflames tensions by sitting on disputed land.

By September 3, MP Kwame Asare Obeng reported that he had tracked down and arrested one of the key suspects. Meanwhile, journalist Kwesi Pratt criticized the conflict, calling for investigations to identify the ‘big people’ and financiers who provide the expensive weapons used in such disturbances.
