New York City Council approves 26 street co-namings to honor 9/11 victims

The New York City Council has passed a bill to co-name 26 streets and public spaces across all five boroughs to honor the victims, responders, and workers of the September 11 attacks. The initiative, sponsored by Speaker Julie Menin and a bipartisan group of council members, aims to provide permanent public recognition of the tragedy as the city approaches the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

The new designations include various memorial names such as ‘Never Forget Way’ in Queens, ‘East Side 9/11 Remembrance Way’ in Manhattan, and ‘9/11 Beacon Memorial Way’ in Brooklyn. Other locations will recognize specific groups or sites, including the Marsh and McLennan memorial in Manhattan, the Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance Way in Coney Island, and the Fresh Kills 9/11 Recovery Heroes Way in Staten Island.

In addition to the street co-namings, the City Council is urging the state to adopt a formal 9/11 curriculum in schools to ensure the history and lessons of the attacks are preserved for future generations.
