Overview

New York City has initiated several programs to commemorate the September 11 attacks as the city approaches the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.

In early September, the city allocated $1 million from the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget to expand educational programming at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This funding, announced by City Council Speaker Julie Menin, focuses on school field trips, digital learning experiences, and virtual classroom resources to educate younger generations about the attacks and subsequent rebuilding efforts.

Following this, the New York City Council approved a bill to co-name 26 streets and public spaces across the five boroughs to honor victims, responders, and workers. These designations include sites such as ‘Never Forget Way’ in Queens and ‘East Side 9/11 Remembrance Way’ in Manhattan. Alongside these physical memorials, the City Council is calling on the state to adopt a formal 9/11 curriculum for schools.
