New York City expands red-light camera program to 600 intersections

New York City has completed the expansion of its red-light camera program, reaching 600 intersections across the five boroughs. This expansion hits the maximum number of cameras currently permitted under state law. The initiative, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Department of Transportation, targets high-risk intersections with histories of serious collisions.

Data indicates that red-light running was a factor in 22% of fatal intersection crashes between 2023 and 2025. Since the installation of cameras at equipped intersections, red-light running has declined by more than 80%, while injuries from T-bone crashes have decreased by 70% and rear-end collision injuries have fallen by nearly 60%.

In addition to camera expansion, the city is considering new measures for repeat offenders under the state’s ‘Stop Excessive Speeding Act’. Drivers who accumulate at least 16 speeding camera violations within 12 months, or 11 points for specific violations within 18 months, could be required to install intelligent speed-limiting devices in their vehicles following a hearing. The city also plans to install these devices in 2,000 municipal vehicles over the next three years.
