New York City red-light camera expansion

Overview

New York City has completed an expansion of its automated red-light camera program, reaching 600 intersections across the five boroughs. This deployment reaches the maximum number of locations permitted under New York State law.

City officials report that the initiative aims to reduce dangerous driving, noting that red-light running contributed to 22 percent of fatal intersection crashes between 2023 and 2025. Data from intersections already equipped with cameras shows a decline in red-light violations of over 80 percent, a 60 percent reduction in rear-end collision injuries, and a 70 percent reduction in T-bone crash injuries.

In addition to the camera expansion, the city is considering measures for repeat offenders under the state’s ‘Stop Excessive Speeding Act’. Drivers who accumulate significant violations could be required to install intelligent speed-limiting devices. The city also plans to install such devices in 2,000 municipal vehicles over the next three years.
