New York City halts generative AI use in K-8 schools
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels have announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Effective for the 2026-27 academic year, the policy affects nearly 600,000 public school students in the nation’s largest school district.
The ban prohibits the use of student-facing generative AI tools and companion chatbots for all K-8 pupils. Additionally, AI components within 38 previously approved educational programs will be disabled or discontinued if they do not meet new, stringent standards. The administration stated the move aims to prioritize foundational learning and human interaction, with Mayor Mamdani noting that younger children require a developmental approach to technology.
