New York City hate crimes surge, driven by antisemitic attacks

New York City has seen a significant rise in hate crimes, driven largely by antisemitic incidents, according to recent data released by the NYPD. Overall hate crimes increased by 15.8% over the past year, rising from 367 incidents in 2025 to 425 in 2026.

Antisemitic hate crimes specifically rose by 8% and accounted for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes during the first eight months of the year. Despite this trend, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that the city experienced its safest summer on record in terms of major violent crimes. Between June and August, the city reported historic lows in shootings, shooting victims, and murders.

Recent high-profile incidents include a July stabbing on the Upper West Side involving two victims and an August incident where a man was arrested for disrupting Shabbat services at a Manhattan synagogue. While major crimes like murders and burglaries have declined, the surge in targeted hate crimes remains a significant concern for city officials.
