NYC antisemitic hate crime surge 2026

Overview

In August 2026, New York City police data showed an 8.5% increase in anti-Jewish hate crimes, with 205 incidents recorded in the first seven months of the year – up from 189 in the same period a year earlier. July alone saw 23 attacks, and Jews, who make up about 10% of the city’s population, accounted for roughly 70% of all reported hate crimes, a 53.3% rise over July 2025.

City officials responded. Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism from Jewish groups who said his outspoken stance on Israel was fueling hostility. State Assembly member Sam Berger and Reform Judaism leader Rabbi Rick Jacobs also denounced the mayor’s rhetoric. Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council, called the data a “wake-up call” and emphasized that “we cannot solely arrest our way out of hate.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog cited the NYPD figures, warning that antisemitism is an “age-old plague” and a “contamination of societies” that must be tackled globally. He condemned Mayor Mamdani’s remarks regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, linking the mayor’s rhetoric to increased risks for Jewish residents. Herzog also referenced a recent stabbing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and an antisemitic arson attack in London.

By September, NYPD data indicated that overall hate crimes rose 15.8% year-over-year, from 367 in 2025 to 425 in 2026. While antisemitic incidents drove much of this increase, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that the city experienced its safest summer on record regarding major violent crimes, reporting historic lows in shootings and murders between June and August.
