New York City Mayor sues to block paraprofessional pay boost

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has filed a lawsuit to block a new law that provides $10,000 bonuses to public school paraprofessionals. While the City Council unanimously passed the “Respect for Paraprofessionals” bill, Mamdani allowed it to lapse into law without his signature before seeking a court injunction.

The administration argues that the legislation, which is expected to cost $325 million, violates state collective bargaining rules under the Taylor Law. Critics and legal analysts suggest that by bypassing the formal bargaining process between the city and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the law sets a precedent that could allow unions to seek pay increases through the City Council rather than through established contract negotiations.

Mamdani has attempted to downplay tensions with City Council Speaker Julie Menin and the UFT, describing recent discussions as “productive.” However, the legal challenge follows a shift in the mayor's stance; he had previously expressed support for the pay increases during his mayoral campaign.
