Zohran Mamdani faces legal challenges over NYC rent freeze and labor disputes

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing multiple legal and political challenges. A Manhattan Supreme Court judge, Brendan Lantry, has ordered City Hall to release communications with the Rent Guidelines Board. This ruling follows a lawsuit from landlords alleging that the administration improperly influenced the board to approve a historic rent freeze for approximately one million rent-stabilized units.

Separately, the Mamdani administration is facing lawsuits regarding the handling of public records requests. Critics and organizations, including the Manhattan Institute, allege that City Hall is causing excessive delays in fulfilling Freedom of Information Law requests.

In a third dispute, City Council Speaker Julie Menin and other council members are urging the Mayor to drop a lawsuit that blocks Local Law 129. The law would provide $10,000 emergency payments to teaching assistants to address staffing vacancies. The administration argues the measure violates Taylor’s Law by bypassing the collective bargaining process, while council members contend the administration failed to negotiate effectively.
