New York and Los Angeles school districts implement AI moratoriums
The two largest school districts in the United States, New York City and Los Angeles, are implementing restrictive policies regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence in classrooms for the 2026-27 school year.
In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students from early childhood through 8th grade. This measure affects approximately 600,000 public school students and includes deactivating AI components in over 38 authorized educational programs. High school students will maintain limited, supervised access to approved tools and will participate in AI literacy modules twice a year. Teachers are permitted to use AI for administrative tasks and lesson planning but are prohibited from using it for grading.
Simultaneously, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has implemented a broader ban, prohibiting generative AI for all students on district-provided devices for the upcoming school year. This decision affects roughly 378,000 students. While LAUSD's ban covers all grade levels, New York's policy is age-specific. Both districts aim to prioritize human interaction, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving over technological reliance.
