New York implements restrictions on classroom technology and AI

Educators and lawmakers in New York are increasingly moving away from classroom technology in favor of analog methods like pen, paper, and physical books. Teachers report that eliminating one-to-one devices such as iPads and Chromebooks has led to improved social interaction among students and test score increases of up to 20 points. These shifts are also intended to combat AI-generated cheating and student distraction.

In response to these trends, State Senator Andrew Gounardes has introduced the FOCUS Act, which aims to establish a ‘right to analog learning’ by limiting school reliance on digital devices. Additionally, New York City has implemented a policy banning individual screens for students through second grade and prohibiting student-facing generative AI through eighth grade. Screen time for older students is strictly capped daily.

These restrictions have drawn criticism from some technology-focused communities. Parents in Silicon Valley have expressed concern that such bans prevent children from engaging with the future, contrasting New York’s policies with institutions like Palo Alto’s Alpha School, which utilizes AI as a primary component of its academic timetable.
