New York police fatally shoot 17-year-old after bridge standoff

Newly released bodycam footage from the New York Attorney General’s Office shows the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Oscar Granados Colindres on June 27 at the Wappingers Creek Bridge in Wappingers Falls, New York.

Officers responded to reports of a suicidal individual holding a knife. The footage captures a prolonged standoff lasting approximately 50 minutes, during which officers spoke to the teen in both English and Spanish, attempting to persuade him to step down from the bridge ledge and drop the weapon.

After the standoff, Colindres descended from the ledge but then ran toward the officers. In response, police opened fire, with at least 10 shots recorded. The teen was fatally struck.

Colindres' family, represented by legal counsel, has criticized the police response. His mother stated that the outcome might have been different if trained crisis intervention professionals had been dispatched instead of armed officers. An investigation into the incident is currently being conducted by the Attorney General’s Office.
