New York police shooting of teenager during bridge standoff

Overview

In late June, New York police officers shot and killed 17-year-old Oscar Granados Colindres during a standoff on the Wappingers Creek Bridge in Wappingers Falls. Following reports of an individual threatening to jump, officers engaged in approximately 50 minutes of negotiations with Colindres, who was armed with a knife. During the standoff, officers spoke to the teenager in both English and Spanish in an attempt to persuade him to step down and drop the weapon.

Newly released body camera footage from the New York Attorney General’s Office shows that after appearing to comply with instructions and moving away from the edge, Colindres ran toward an officer. An officer positioned further away discharged at least 10 shots, striking Colindres, who died at the scene.

The teenager’s family has hired legal counsel and questioned why the encounter resulted in a fatal shooting, with his mother suggesting that trained crisis intervention professionals might have managed the situation differently. The New York State Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating the incident and the officers' procedures.
