Brooklyn Bridge: NYPD officer shoots knife-wielding man

A man armed with a knife died after being shot by New York City police on the Brooklyn Bridge early Friday morning. The incident began following a 911 call reporting a man on the bridge structure who appeared to be attempting suicide.

Specialized emergency responders attached themselves to the bridge cables to engage with the man, who had climbed the suspension cables. For approximately one hour, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, urging the man to drop his knife and descend safely. During the standoff, the man reportedly claimed he had a bomb and expressed a desire to die.

According to NYPD officials, the man began descending the cable rapidly toward the officers. As he approached within approximately 90 centimeters to one meter of an officer, he raised the knife toward them. An officer positioned on the roadway fired a single shot, striking the man.

First responders provided medical assistance, and the man was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he later passed away. Police recovered a knife and a flashlight at the scene; authorities are still investigating the validity of the man's claim regarding an explosive device. The shooting, which was captured on police body cameras, has triggered a standard investigation. The bridge was temporarily closed following the incident.
