New York announces energy rebates and expanded utility discounts

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced two major initiatives to assist residents with rising energy costs. Through the Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program, approximately 8.2 million households will receive one-time rebate checks of up to $200. These automatic payments, which require no application, are scheduled to be mailed starting September 21 and will continue through December. The amount of the rebate is determined by the recipient's 2024 tax filing status and income level.

Additionally, the state is expanding the Energy Affordability Program (EAP), which provides monthly discounts directly on utility bills. Officials estimate that 2.5 million more households are eligible for these monthly savings, which can reach up to $500 annually. Unlike the POWER rebates, residents may need to enroll in the EAP through their utility provider. The programs aim to keep utility costs below six percent of household income for participating families.
