New York Times ranks top Mexican restaurants in the U.S

The New York Times has released a ranking of 41 of the greatest Mexican restaurants across the United States, highlighting a culinary shift toward traditional and modern Mexican fare over Tex-Mex.

In New Orleans, Acamaya was recognized as the only Louisiana establishment on the list. Located in the Bywater neighborhood and opened in 2024 by Chef Ana Castro and her sister Lydia, the restaurant is noted for integrating Gulf ingredients into Mexican dishes, such as costra tacos with shrimp and local crab.

In Michigan, Detroit’s Vecino was named the sole representative for the state. Located in Midtown, the restaurant is co-owned by Adriana Jiménez and features a kitchen led by Edgar Torres. The menu focuses on contemporary Mexico City flavors, reflecting Jiménez’s family heritage.
