New York to mail energy rebate checks to eligible residents

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that energy rebate checks will be mailed to eligible residents to help offset rising household energy costs. The distribution of these checks is scheduled to begin on September 21 and will continue through December.

Eligible recipients include individuals who were full-time New York State residents for the 2024 tax year, filed a timely state resident income tax return, reported income within specific qualifying thresholds, and were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return. No application or sign-up process is required to receive the funds.

The amount of the rebate depends on the recipient's filing status and 2024 state tax return data. For example, joint filers with an income under $150,000 are eligible for a $200 check. The initiative is part of an ongoing energy affordability agenda aimed at addressing the increased cost of living.
