New Zealand energy sector reports significant emissions reductions

New Zealand’s energy and industrial sectors are reporting significant progress in emissions reduction through technological innovation and collaborative initiatives.

A report from Energy Resources Aotearoa indicates that emissions from production, processing, transport, and use within the energy sector have decreased by 27% since 2010. Overall domestic oil and gas sector emissions have fallen by more than 60% during this period, with venting and flaring emissions dropping by over 90%. Key contributors include OMV, which reduced operational emissions by 55% over five years, and Todd Corporation, which has implemented fugitive emissions surveys using Quantitative Optical Gas Imaging to detect methane leaks.

In the industrial sector, Alliance Group’s $16 million heat pump programme was recognized with a New Zealand Energy Excellence Award. The initiative, implemented at processing plants in Otago and Southland, replaces coal-fired boilers with efficient heat pump systems. This transition reduces annual emissions by approximately 24,680 tonnes of CO₂e by utilizing waste heat and local water sources.
