New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon praises India’s growth and pledges strong ties despite Khalistan concerns

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed India’s economic transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting the rise from 250 million people lifted out of poverty to a projected 750 million middle‑class by the decade’s end. He welcomed Modi’s July visit, during which the two leaders signed multiple memoranda of understanding covering defence, maritime security, agri‑tech, tourism, education, sports and a new free‑trade agreement aimed at expanding market access and talent mobility.

Luxon also addressed the Khalistan issue, stating that while it has caused pain in India, it will not derail the growing partnership. He warned that intimidation or criminal activity linked to the separatist movement would be met with strict police action, emphasizing New Zealand’s commitment to free speech and liberal values. The visit culminated in a large diaspora gathering in Auckland, where Modi addressed about 10,000 Indian‑origin New Zealanders.
