Overview

June 2026 saw New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay move the first‑reading of legislation to implement a free‑trade agreement (FTA) with India, removing tariffs on about 95 % of New Zealand exports and all Indian exports. The deal, aimed at doubling primary‑sector export value by 2034, focused on wine, horticulture, mānuka honey, kiwifruit and leather, and sparked debate over immigration provisions.

During Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s July 10‑11 visit, Modi and Luxon signed memoranda covering defence, maritime security, agri‑tech, tourism, education and sports, and pledged a new FTA that would broaden market access and talent mobility. Luxon praised India’s economic transformation – from 250 million lifted out of poverty to a projected 750 million middle‑class by decade’s end – and addressed the Khalistan issue, affirming New Zealand’s commitment to free speech while warning against intimidation linked to the separatist movement. The visit concluded with a large diaspora gathering in Auckland.

On 30 July, the relationship was upgraded to a full Strategic Partnership. Ten agreements were signed, including a Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement for naval refuelling, a Maritime Cooperation memorandum, and a four‑year “Roadmap to 2030” outlining cooperation in defence, trade, agriculture, science and people‑to‑people exchanges. Both governments set a target to double bilateral trade to NZ$7 billion by 2030 and discussed joint responses to West Asia security challenges during Modi’s meeting with President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi.
