New Zealand rejects Canadian proposal to join defense bank
New Zealand has declined an invitation from Canada to join the Defense, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB). The proposed institution is designed to finance the defense industries of participating nations.
According to documents from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in late April to join negotiations for the organization's charter. However, following departmental recommendations in July, New Zealand officials advised ministers to reject the proposal. The decision was driven by the requirement of an initial $100 million contribution and the expectation of rising subsequent costs.
The DSRB is being developed with participation from countries including Canada, Ukraine, and Turkey, alongside several European nations. The initiative aligns with broader efforts by Canada and the European Union to foster transatlantic cooperation and create a comprehensive partnership framework.
