New Zealand reports record renewable energy generation

New Zealand has reached record levels of renewable electricity generation, according to data from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment for the quarter ending June 30. Renewable sources accounted for 92 per cent of electricity generation during this period.

Key milestones include a record for solar generation at 242GWh, a 56.2 per cent increase from the previous year, and a record for geothermal generation at 2,621 GWh. Additionally, wholesale electricity prices decreased by 66 per cent compared to the same quarter last year.

Energy Minister Simeon Brown attributed the price decreases to several factors, including the procurement of an LNG import facility to support renewable electricity. He also noted the fast-track approval of eight renewable energy projects and the reversal of a previous ban on oil and gas exploration as part of the government's strategy to ensure secure and affordable power.
