New Zealand sees increase in weekday weddings as couples cut costs

Data from New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs shows that Saturday remains the most popular day for marriages, accounting for 45% of all weddings in 2025. Friday follows at 20%, while Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each capture about 6% of ceremonies, making weekday weddings a clear minority.

Despite the low share, some couples and vendors are embracing weekday nuptials to reduce expenses. Wedding vendor and content creator Hannah Hart chose a Tuesday ceremony, noting the lower venue and vendor rates and describing the experience as “the coolest thing ever.” Analysts suggest that younger generations, especially Gen Z, are favoring smaller, budget‑friendly celebrations, viewing weddings more as a ritual than a costly performance.

The trend reflects broader cost‑saving motives, as weekday bookings typically avoid the premium rates charged for Saturday events, particularly during peak summer months.
