New Zealand to launch new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa

Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to post-study work arrangements, including the introduction of a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa effective November 16, 2026. This new visa is designed to provide a temporary bridge for international graduates who have completed eligible qualifications but do not qualify for the existing Post-Study Work Visa.

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will grant up to six months of open work rights, allowing holders to work for any employer in any sector without requiring a job offer in hand prior to application. To be eligible, applicants must have completed a New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) Level 5, 6, or 7 qualification through at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand. Certain programs, such as English-language courses, foundation programs, and bridging qualifications, are excluded.

Applicants must demonstrate at least NZD 5,000 in available funds and meet standard health and character requirements. The visa is a one-time opportunity that cannot be extended or renewed, and it does not permit business ownership or the inclusion of partners and children. Graduates must apply within three months of their student visa expiring, using the period to seek employment and potentially transition to longer-term options like the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
