New Zealand tourism sector sees surge in visitors and business interest

New Zealand’s tourism sector is experiencing a significant rebound, with international visitor arrivals in June 2026 reaching 95% of 2019 levels. Statistics New Zealand reported 201,900 international arrivals for the month, an 8.1% increase compared to June 2025. Annual figures show the country welcomed 3,674,600 overseas visitors in the year ending June 2026, a 9% increase over the previous year.

Key markets driving this growth include Australia, which saw 108,200 arrivals (up 14%), and China, which saw 14,300 arrivals (up 27%). This growth comes despite a 1.7% decline in global air passenger demand reported by the International Air Transport Association.

Economic indicators show strengthening visitor spending, with median spend rising to $2,248 and daily spend increasing by 8% to $309. This momentum is fueling a surge in the business-for-sale market, as investors seek opportunities in accommodation, hospitality, and adventure operations. Tourism remains New Zealand’s second-largest export earner, supporting the government's goal to double the value of tourism exports by 2034.
