New Zealand tourism sector recovery and performance

Overview

New Zealand’s international tourism sector continues to expand, with July 2026 visitor arrivals reaching 256,600, an 8.5 per cent increase over July 2025. For the year ending July 2026, total arrivals reached 3.69 million. Growth is supported by key markets including Australia, China, and the United States. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has noted that this momentum aligns with the government’s goal to double the value of tourism exports by 2034.

To support this demand, the government is planning a National Events Strategy. Minister Upston stated the strategy aims to “establish long-term direction to maximize public value, enhance the nation's international brand, and support economic growth” through a deliberate framework for attracting events. To further this strategic vision, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has released the Tourism Policy Statement. This framework aims to align government and industry players to support sustainable growth while protecting natural landscapes and cultural identity. Additionally, a Tourism Leadership Group is being established to provide expert advice to the Minister on sector challenges across aviation, hospitality, and regional tourism.

International visitor numbers are nearing pre-pandemic levels; in August 2026, arrivals reached 99 per cent of August 2019 levels. Minister Upston noted significant growth from several markets, including a 32 per cent increase from China and record arrivals from Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore. Tourism remains the nation’s second-largest export earner, supporting approximately one in nine jobs.

Regional promotion remains active, including trade roadshows by Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism in Australia. However, industry discussions highlight the ongoing need for infrastructure investment to manage increasing visitor numbers and maintain experience quality.
