Newborn Surrendered at Texas Safe Haven Baby Box Highlights Program’s Reach

Three newborns were anonymously placed in Safe Haven Baby Boxes within a single week, including one dropped off at the Woodlands Fire Department in Texas. The infant was quickly retrieved, evaluated at a local hospital, and entered state custody.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes, temperature‑controlled incubators installed at fire stations, police stations, and hospitals, allow at‑risk mothers to surrender infants safely and legally. Founded by Monica Kelsey in Indiana in 2015, the program now operates over 455 locations in 23 U.S. states, with more than 80 infants surrendered nationwide. The Woodlands box, opened in April 2025, is part of this expanding network and exemplifies the system’s intended function.

According to Fire Chief Palmer Buck and local officials, the safe surrender protocol worked as designed, ensuring the baby’s immediate medical care and offering a compassionate alternative to unsafe abandonment.
