Safe Haven baby box program expands

Entities: Safe Haven Baby Boxes · Nancy Tate · HB 447 · Monica Kelsey · Kentucky

Overview

In early July 2026 a newborn was placed in a Safe Haven baby box at Marion General Hospital in Indiana. The infant entered state custody, illustrating the program’s growth since its 2015 launch, now operating at over 455 sites nationwide.

A report ten days later described three newborns anonymously surrendered within a single week, including a baby dropped off at the Woodlands Fire Department in Texas. Officials highlighted the rapid retrieval and medical care, underscoring the expanding reach of the Safe Haven network across additional states and its role as a safe alternative for at‑risk mothers.

By late July, the initiative had added two more boxes, bringing the total to 457 across 26 states. Since its inception by Monica Kelsey—who was conceived from rape and later abandoned—the program recorded 83 direct infant surrenders and, through a dedicated phone line, facilitated over 9,000 calls and 229 additional handoffs to police, fire stations, hospitals, and houses of worship. New Kentucky legislation (HB 447 and HB 155) authorized climate‑controlled, lockable boxes with silent alarms, further expanding legal protection for anonymous drop‑offs and waiving parents’ rights to future court notifications or claims against custodial agencies.
