Newborn Surrendered via Safe Haven Baby Box in Indiana

A newborn was placed in a Safe Haven baby box at Marion General Hospital in Indiana, according to local outlet WTHR. The infant is now in the care of the Indiana Department of Child Services, which is working to locate an adoptive family.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide temperature‑controlled incubators installed in fire stations, police stations and hospitals, allowing at‑risk mothers to safely and legally surrender infants. The program, founded by Monica Kelsey, launched nine years ago in Indiana and now operates at more than 455 locations across the United States. According to the organization, over 80 newborns have been surrendered to baby boxes nationwide, with assistance provided for at least 200 additional infant surrenders. Kelsey said, “We are grateful this mother trusted our program on one of the hardest days of her life to keep her baby safe.”
