Brazil Newcastle disease outbreak triggers international trade restrictions

A Newcastle disease outbreak has been confirmed at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The infection was identified through active epidemiological surveillance rather than reported symptoms. In response, the Brazilian government has declared a 60-day zoosanitary emergency in the municipalities of Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas, and Nova Erechim.

The affected farm, which houses approximately 6,000 turkeys, has been closed and all bird movement has been suspended. Authorities are implementing control and eradication measures, including the sanitary elimination of the birds and disinfection of the facilities. Approximately 133 farms in the surrounding area are currently under sanitary monitoring.

The outbreak has led to immediate international trade consequences. Mexico has suspended imports of all Brazilian poultry products, including meat, offal, fertile eggs, and chicks up to three days old. Additionally, China and Malaysia have suspended poultry meat imports from Brazil, with China's restriction specifically targeting products from Santa Catarina. Chile has also imposed restrictions on various poultry-related items from the region. Brazil has notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and its international trading partners of the situation. Despite these measures, Brazilian authorities emphasize that the consumption of poultry products subject to official inspection remains safe.
