Newfoundland and Labrador approves multi-billion-dollar energy deal with Quebec
The Newfoundland and Labrador legislature has approved a multi-billion-dollar agreement to share energy produced in Labrador with Hydro-Québec. The vote passed by a narrow margin, with the 20 governing Progressive Conservative members and one Independent supporting the deal, while 18 members from the Liberal, NDP, and Independent benches opposed it.
The agreement involves plans for over $50 billion in hydroelectric and wind energy developments along the Churchill River. Premier Tony Wakeham expressed pride in the deal, stating it provides the province with unprecedented energy resources and decision-making power. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette also welcomed the decision, noting it would enhance energy security and autonomy for Quebec.
The Innu Nation has voiced opposition to the agreement, arguing that the draft deal does not provide sufficient benefits to Innu people while requiring them to bear the risks and impacts of major development on their traditional territory. Premier Wakeham indicated intentions to meet with Innu representatives to address unresolved issues.
