Nexans and Space Norway announce major subsea cable developments
Nexans has commenced industrial-scale production of 525 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) XLPE subsea cables at its facility in Halden, Norway. This production is part of the LanWin2 project for TenneT, which aims to connect offshore wind generation in the German North Sea to the German transmission grid to support renewable energy integration.
Separately, Space Norway has awarded Ciena a turnkey contract to modernize its legacy Svalbard subsea cable systems and deploy technology for the new Arctic Way system. Expected to begin service in 2028, Arctic Way will serve as the world’s northernmost subsea cable system, facilitating data traffic between the mainland, Jan Mayen, and Svalbard to support research and national security.
