Nexi impersonation smishing scams targeting bank accounts

Cybercriminals are utilizing smishing techniques to target individuals by impersonating the digital payments company Nexi. Fraudulent SMS messages, often appearing to come from official sources like ‘Nexi Alert’, claim that unauthorized high-value transactions are in progress, such as a charge for 973 euros.

The messages create a sense of urgency, prompting victims to call a provided phone number or click a link to cancel the transaction. Once in contact, scammers pose as customer service agents to manipulate victims into revealing security codes, login credentials, or authorizing transfers via home banking.

Security experts advise that legitimate financial institutions never request passwords, PINs, or security codes through SMS links or unverified phone calls. Users are encouraged to verify account activity only through official apps or verified contact channels found on the provider's official website.
