AI integration drives digital growth and legal challenges in Southeast Asia

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving significant shifts across various sectors in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, the digital economy is projected to reach nearly US$100 billion by 2025, fueling demand for AI infrastructure and connectivity. Telkom Indonesia reports that AI is driving a 10 to 20-fold increase in connectivity demand, particularly for international submarine cables.

In the legal sector, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria emphasized that while AI can assist with administrative tasks and case analysis, it must not replace human judges. He noted that generative AI poses challenges regarding the authentication of synthetic evidence, such as deepfake videos or audio, in court.

Economically, the AI security market is expected to reach US$4.8 billion by 2027 due to rising cyber threats. Meanwhile, companies like Anthropic are eyeing massive total addressable markets exceeding US$30 trillion ahead of potential IPOs. In Singapore, the government is targeting AI transformation in high-impact sectors like manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare to stimulate broader economic growth.

However, the transition presents challenges. Users have reported technical glitches, such as Grok Lite producing nonsensical responses, and SpaceX has deployed Grok to handle over 15,000 Starlink customer calls daily. Additionally, experts warn of workplace anxiety regarding job security and the need for transparent communication during AI implementation.
