NFL clarifies rules to allow celebrations imitating drinking
The NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) issued a joint statement clarifying that players will not be disciplined for on-field celebrations that imitate the act of drinking a beverage. This policy shift follows a controversy involving San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who was previously fined for a gesture the league deemed an imitation of drinking beer.
Juszczyk appealed the fine, noting that the gesture was a reference to his nickname, “Juice,” and stating, “I don’t even drink beer!” Reports indicate his fine has since been rescinded.
While drinking-related celebrations are now permitted, the league maintained that gestures depicting violence, weapons, smoking, or drug use remain strictly prohibited. The new guidance aims to provide players with greater clarity regarding celebration rules and to address gray areas before discipline is imposed.
