Kyle Juszczyk NFL fine appeal and rule clarification
Overview
San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk is appealing a $14,926 fine issued by the NFL for a touchdown celebration performed during a game against the Miami Dolphins. The league categorized the gesture—which involved tipping his head back as if drinking—as an “offensive demonstration” that could “reasonably be construed as being in poor taste” due to its resemblance to chugging beer.
Juszczyk maintains the gesture is a reference to his nickname, “Juice,” and is intended to mimic drinking juice rather than alcohol. He has highlighted the perceived hypocrisy of the penalty, noting the NFL’s extensive sponsorship deals with alcohol brands and the prominence of beer branding in stadiums. Former player Jason Kelce has expressed support for Juszczyk, describing the ruling as “hypocrisy at the highest level.”
In response to the controversy, the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) issued a joint statement clarifying that players will not be disciplined for on-field celebrations that imitate the act of drinking a beverage. While gestures depicting violence, weapons, smoking, or drug use remain strictly prohibited, the new guidance aims to provide clarity regarding celebration rules. Following Juszczyk’s appeal, the NFL rescinded his fine, stating the celebration was simulating the drinking of a juice box.
In a related development, the NFL also rescinded a fine issued to Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson, who had been penalized for a similar “distasteful celebration” that he clarified was actually an imitation of drinking Gatorade.
In addition to the celebration fine, Juszczyk is facing a separate $20,033 penalty regarding the illegal use of a helmet from Week 1, which is expected to be addressed in a future hearing.
