Southeast Asia weather: Storm threats and flooding hit Vietnam and Thailand

Severe weather across Southeast Asia has caused widespread disruption. In Vietnam, a tropical depression in the northern Gulf of Tonkin is expected to strengthen into a storm, bringing heavy rain and high winds to northern provinces.

Hanoi has recorded significant rainfall, with some areas exceeding 130mm, though water management systems have prevented major urban flooding thus far. In central provinces like Nghe An and Ha Tinh, heavy rains have triggered landslides, washed away road sections, and submerged thousands of hectares of rice crops. In Dak Lak, a falling tree caused a fatality during a storm.

In Lam Dong, tornadoes and heavy rain caused significant agricultural damage, destroying approximately 500 durian trees with losses estimated at 5 billion VND. Meanwhile, in Northern Thailand, flash floods have inundated homes and washed away bridges, cutting off access to several communities.
