NHL contract market shifts following major player extensions
The NHL market for young stars is shifting following several massive contract extensions and offer sheets. Leo Carlsson of the Anaheim Ducks became the league’s highest-paid player after the Ducks matched a five-year, $90 million offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers, resulting in an $18 million annual cap hit.
This reset has influenced other high-profile negotiations. Ryan Leonard of the Washington Capitals signed an eight-year, $84 million extension, while Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks secured a five-year, $75 million deal. Other notable players, including Macklin Celebrini and Cutter Gauthier, have also signed extensions with annual average values exceeding $13 million.
Adam Fantilli of the Columbus Blue Jackets remains a significant figure in these ongoing negotiations. As the last of the top three centers from the 2023 NHL Draft without a new deal, Fantilli is reportedly still far apart from Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell regarding his contract value in this new economic landscape.
