NHS National Rehabilitation Centre opens in the UK

The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) has officially opened near Loughborough, UK, welcoming its first patients on September 2. The £105 million, 70-bed facility is operated by the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and is designed to provide specialist care for individuals recovering from life-changing injuries and illnesses.

One of the first patients admitted is Neil Smith, a builder from Derbyshire receiving treatment for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). The facility utilizes advanced technology and a multidisciplinary team to provide a level of rehabilitation care described by medical staff as exceeding previous capabilities.

As part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme, the NRC is designed to meet the NHS Net Zero Carbon Standard. The building incorporates sustainable features such as air source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic panels, natural ventilation, and passive design principles to create an energy-efficient, all-electric environment.
