Opening of the NHS National Rehabilitation Centre

The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) has officially opened near Loughborough in Nottinghamshire, welcoming its first patients. The £105 million to £107 million facility provides 70 beds for individuals recovering from life-changing illnesses or injuries.

As part of the government’s New Hospital Programme, the NRC is the NHS’s first single-site operationally carbon-neutral building. It utilizes sustainable features including air source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic panels, and passive design principles to meet the NHS Net Zero Carbon Standard.

The center is equipped with advanced medical technology, such as the NHS’s most comprehensive robotics suite and the UK’s first 360-degree hoist. The project, completed by the Integrated Health Projects joint venture, faced a six-month delay due to water quality issues that required the installation of a chlorine dioxide unit and the replacement of 183 mixer taps.

Located on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate, the NRC operates alongside the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, allowing for the integration of civilian and military rehabilitation expertise.
