NHS Trust dismisses 15 staff over Nottingham victims' record breaches

The Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust has dismissed a total of 15 staff members for inappropriately accessing the medical records of victims from the June 2023 Nottingham attacks. The victims, Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates, were killed by Valdo Calocane, who was later sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

In addition to the 15 dismissals, the trust issued 15 final written warnings and two first written warnings. Two separate cases resulted in no action. The staff involved included doctors, nurses, and other registered healthcare professionals. NUH has informed the Information Commissioner's Office, Nottinghamshire Police, and medical regulators including the General Medical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH, stated there is “simply no excuse” for accessing patient records without a legitimate reason. To prevent future breaches, the trust is testing a new system to protect patient data and alert officials to potential unauthorized access. The trust has also launched a campaign to educate staff on data protection and the consequences of privacy violations.
