Niassa Special Reserve insurgent attack causes deaths and mass displacement
An insurgent attack in the Marangira administrative post of Mozambique's Marrupa District has caused significant casualties, abductions, and displacement. The attack, which targeted the Marangira Coutada hunting concession within the Niassa Special Reserve, resulted in at least one death and left one member of the Defence and Security Forces injured. Authorities report that at least eleven people, including minors, were abducted during the incident.
The violence led to the destruction of critical infrastructure, including a health facility, a police post, and a mobile telecommunications tower. Attackers also seized and burned several vehicles. The assault has displaced between 2,000 and 2,700 residents, who are currently being assisted at reception centers.
In response, the United States has advised its citizens against traveling to the Niassa Special Reserve and the border areas of Cabo Delgado, maintaining a ‘Do Not Travel’ designation for the region. Niassa provincial Secretary Silva Livone and local security forces have increased patrols to restore order and protect the area, which is strategically important for nature tourism and conservation. The attackers reportedly entered the province from Cabo Delgado, raising concerns about the expansion of the long-running insurgency into northern provinces.
