Niassa insurgent attack kills one and displaces 2,000 people

Insurgents launched an attack on the Marangira administrative post in Mozambique’s Niassa province, targeting the Mozambique Wild Adventures (MWA) safari camp located near the Niassa Special Reserve. The assault resulted in at least one death and the displacement of approximately 2,000 people.

During the raid, attackers destroyed the MWA tourist camp, a health center, a police post, and a mobile phone antenna. The camp is associated with football coach Carlos Queiroz. Authorities believe the insurgents, likely originating from the neighboring Cabo Delgado province, targeted the area to secure supplies and reinforce their logistics base.

At least 11 people, including children, were reported kidnapped during the incident. Three U.S. citizens present at the camp were successfully evacuated by air in coordination with the U.S. Embassy. In response to the violence, the United States Department of State has issued a travel advisory, categorizing the Niassa Special Reserve as a “Do Not Travel” zone and advising citizens to avoid the border areas between Niassa and Cabo Delgado.
