Rainstorms and heat warnings impact Central American and Caribbean cities

Heavy rain on the night of 25 June caused widespread flooding in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, inundating homes, a school and a sports complex and prompting emergency calls after drainage systems were overwhelmed.

In Nicaragua, low‑pressure systems are forecast to bring hot, windy conditions with scattered rain across the Caribbean and central regions, while winds reach up to 55 km/h along the Pacific coast.

Costa Rica expects two tropical waves to approach later in the week; officials note that the El Niño pattern may limit rainfall intensity but isolated showers could still occur, especially in the south.

Honduras is monitoring a new tropical wave that will bring scattered showers and possible thunderstorms on Thursday, with higher chances in the east and northwest.

Guatemala’s meteorological service warned of river rise and flood risk after several days of heavy rain, reporting nine deaths, thousands affected, evacuations and damage to houses, bridges and schools.

In Mexico, the state of Puebla faces strong thunderstorms, lightning and possible hail, with gusts up to 50 km/h and heightened flood risk in the Valley of Mexico.

Spain’s coastal town of Carnota anticipates cloudy skies, high humidity and isolated rain with a chance of brief thunderstorms on 25 June.
