Nicaragua's President Ortega Declares End of Elections

During a mass ceremony in Managua on 19 July 2026 to mark the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, President Daniel Ortega told supporters that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections. He said, “Here there will be no more elections for them to try to seize the government and seize power,” and warned that parties backed by the United States would never return to power.

Ortega said the government will work with the Assembly National to draft “laws that build a wall” against what he called “golpistas” and “vendepatrias.” The pledge follows a 2025 constitutional reform that extended the presidential term to six years, created a co‑presidency for his wife Rosario Murillo, and eliminated the balance of powers. The reform pushed the next scheduled general election from November 2026 to November 2027.

International bodies—including the United Nations Human Rights Council, the OAS, the European Parliament and the United States—have condemned the changes as consolidating authoritarian rule and violating human‑rights standards. Opposition leaders in exile have warned that the declaration seals the fate of any democratic challenge in Nicaragua.
