Overview

In July 2026, marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, President Daniel Ortega announced that Nicaragua would cease holding elections, postponing the November 2026 vote to at least November 2027. A week later he declared elections permanently abolished, pledging to work with the National Assembly to pass “wall” laws against opposition. The statements follow 2025 constitutional reforms that extended the presidential term to six years, created a co‑presidency for Rosario Murillo, and removed key checks on executive power, cementing a de‑facto one‑party state.

On 19 July, Ortega reiterated at a rally in Managua that “there will be no more elections for them to try to seize the government,” and promised legislation to block any opposition activity. Two days later, at the same anniversary event, he again affirmed that no future free elections would be allowed. The move was condemned by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Organization of American States, the United States and other international bodies. Opposition leader Juan Sebastián Chamorro, speaking from exile, described the decision as a step toward a one‑party state and warned of further isolation for Managua.

Later on 21 July, Ortega framed the abolition as a safeguard against a U.S.-backed opposition seeking to regain power. Analysts noted that the decree deepens Nicaragua’s diplomatic isolation, with existing U.S. sanctions remaining in place. The decision builds on a broader pattern of repression that began after the 2018 protests, including the imprisonment and exile of opposition figures, strict media control, and a sustained crackdown on dissent.
