Nicaragua commemorates Sandinista founder Carlos Fonseca with art show and nationwide school program

The Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas Rodrigo Peñalba in Managua opened an exhibition of four portraits honoring Carlos Fonseca Amador, founder of the Front Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). The works, created by teachers including Javier Tercero, Reynaldo Bosque and Freddy Herrera, depict different moments of Fonseca’s life—such as his imprisonment—and stress his influence on national sovereignty and revolutionary art.

From June 19 to 24, the Ministry of Education ran a pedagogical day dedicated to Fonseca’s legacy in 19 departmental sites and university venues. The program featured conferences, forums, reflection circles, dance, theater and other artistic performances. Education official Omar Cortedano said the commemoration marks “90 years of the arrival to this blessed and always free Nicaragua,” highlighting the continued relevance of Fonseca’s revolutionary thought and popular‑education ideas.
