Nicaragua political parties support constitutional reforms

Representatives from 14 legally constituted political parties in Nicaragua have expressed their support for proposed partial reforms to the country's Political Constitution. During a consultation process titled 'Hay Patria,' held in late September, delegates met with the National Assembly's Special Constitutional Commission and the Supreme Electoral Council.

Supporters of the reform, including members of the Movimiento Liberal Constitucionalista Independente (MLCI) and Alianza por la República (APRE), stated that the changes are necessary to strengthen national sovereignty, peace, security, and stability. The reforms aim to limit foreign interference in domestic political affairs.

The legislative process includes a phase to prevent the candidacy of individuals deemed 'traitors to the homeland' or those who have called for international sanctions or invasions via social media. The National Assembly aims to ratify the constitutional reforms by January 18, 2027.
