Nicaragua holds public consultations on proposed constitutional reforms

The National Assembly of Nicaragua is conducting a series of public consultations, known as the ‘Hay Patria’ process, regarding a proposed constitutional reform. These meetings have taken place in various municipalities, including Condega, Sébaco, San Isidro, Matiguás, Muy Muy, and Río Blanco.

Presented by Assembly President Gustavo Porras, the reform proposal includes seven key changes. These include establishing seven-year terms for government and elected officials, moving the inauguration date to January 18, and granting new powers to the Supreme Electoral Council. The proposal also stipulates that only Nicaraguan laws will have legal effect within the country and seeks to limit the electoral participation of individuals who request foreign military intervention, support sanctions against Nicaragua, or receive foreign funding.

Participants in the consultations, including students, teachers, health workers, and local producers, have expressed support for the initiative, citing the protection of national sovereignty, peace, and stability.
